Fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin and ofloxacin have a distinctive profile of adverse effects. The US FDA has recently issued new warnings to highlight the risk of profound hypoglycaemia, as well as mental state changes including delirium. Coming in addition to warnings about muscle and tendon effects and nervous system issues, it is increasingly apparent that this class of antibiotics should be reserved for situations where no practical alternatives exist.
